Geocache Description:

.30 caliber ammo can great for trackables. Northbound traffic take the Highway 119 exit and then you can re-enter on Highway 43 and southbound traffic take the Highway 43 exit and re-enter on Highway 119.

In September 2009, I archived this cache and planted a new cache to continue on the legacy: If ya lived in Taft... II. Further, this cache was such a great TB hotel, I decided to go ahead and plant another easy access cache that people could drop TBs in from the Taft area so they could be picked up by the travelers of I-5: Taft Highway Travel Bug Hotel.

Ok, anyone from Taft knows this one. If you have no idea where Taft is, then we need some back ground.

Taft is a small town on the western edge of Kern County. Taft is known as a backwards kind of place that is full of hicks and even Oildaleans (Bakersfield’s redneck neighborhood) make fun of Taft.

The good news about Taft is the housing market is about half of what it is in Bakersfield and it is actually kind of a nice place to live, in some parts. So the Chamber of Commerce came up with a plan to advertise living in Taft. They put up these signs that say, “If ya live in Taft…you’d be home NOW!”

These signs quickly became a point of contention in Taft. Many people thought the spelling of you as “ya” didn’t help our “hickish” image and some people even resorted to spray painting the signs to imply people in Taft use illicit drugs! (gasp) In general I find them amusing as I do live in Taft and every time I drive to work in the morning and afternoon, I have an issue with the signs because I do live in Taft and I am never home “NOW!”.

So this cache is in tribute to the Taft Chamber of Commerce and their unique signs. Someday these signs might be a distant memory, but thanks to Geocaching, their memory will never die!

For those of you who could care less about Taft, this is a great location for travel bugs and GEO coins as you head up or down I-5. This has easy access for both northbound and southbound travel and has plenty of shoulder space for safe Geocaching. I am not into the trinkets aspect of Geocaching so you will have to fill up the .30 caliber ammo can with your own.
